Teen Voices: The Power We Don't Know We Have

Why Should Teenagers Be Involved In Advocacy?

As a teenager, I have been through my fair share of daily troubles. Mental health struggles, societal expectations and the pressure to conform to certain norms is something every teenager faces on a day-to-day basis. But what makes my journey a bit different is that I’ve always had the support of my family.

Growing up in a household where my voice has always been valued, I have never had to fight to be heard. But once I opened my eyes and looked around me, I realised that not every teenager has been given that luxury. Most teens aren't given the same amount of support or encouragement to speak up about their struggles. That's when it hit me that I am just one of many and the fact that I am privileged enough to speak up makes it my responsibility to do so.

Once I reflected on my own experiences, I realized that advocacy isn't just for adults with more life experience or power. Advocacy is for anyone who has a true passion to make a difference, no matter their age. And for us as teens, this is the perfect time to speak up. We may be younger, but our perspectives are fresh, our potential is untapped, and we’re the ones who will inherit the world shaped by today’s decisions.

We are facing issues like climate change, mental health, and social injustice head-on. These problems are not just distant concerns; they are affecting us right now, as teenagers. Yet, society often tells us to wait our turn, to focus on “youthful” things and leave the important conversations to adults. But why should we wait? Why should we remain silent about the future we will soon be navigating?

Being involved in advocacy isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about being willing to ask the difficult questions, challenge outdated norms, and take action toward a better future. It’s about using the privilege of our voices to uplift those who are silenced, and using our position to influence change in ways that matter for us today and for those who will follow.

That’s why I believe whole-heartedly that teens should be involved in advocacy. Because we have the passion, the drive, and the responsibility to make a difference. Our voices matter, now more than ever. It's high-time that we speak up, stand tall, and take action to build the future we deserve.
